Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga has called for stronger cooperation among Kenya’s law enforcement and criminal justice agencies in the fight against transnational organised crime.
Ingonga made the remarks during a meeting with key actors in the criminal justice sector and representatives from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which focused on strengthening efforts to combat organised criminal networks operating across national borders.
The meeting brought together officials from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Asset Recovery Agency (ARA), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Financial Reporting Centre (FRC).
The agencies deliberated on emerging threats posed by transnational criminal networks and explored ways of enhancing cooperation, information sharing and coordinated responses to crimes that transcend national boundaries.
Ingonga said the increasingly complex nature of organised crime requires institutions to work together rather than operate in isolation.
“Tackling transnational organized crime requires joint efforts, strong partnerships and coordinated action among all actors in the criminal justice system,” the DPP said.
The DPP emphasised the importance of closer collaboration between investigative, financial intelligence, asset recovery, revenue and prosecution agencies in disrupting criminal networks and bringing offenders to justice.
The involvement of the FBI also highlights the growing importance of international partnerships in tackling crimes whose operations, financing and proceeds may span several jurisdictions.
Kenyan authorities have increasingly focused on strengthening inter-agency cooperation to address sophisticated criminal activities, including illicit financial flows, corruption, money laundering and other forms of organised crime.
The meeting provided a platform for the agencies to assess emerging threats and identify areas where greater coordination could strengthen Kenya’s response to transnational criminal activity.
