The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two employees of Mumias Level 4 Hospital in Kakamega County for allegedly demanding and receiving a bribe of Sh200,000 to facilitate payment for medical equipment supplied to the hospital.

The suspects—William Mmasava, a Supply Chain Officer, and Linet Kavaya, a Biomedical Engineer—were arrested on May 21, 2025, at the KCB Mumias branch shortly after allegedly receiving the bribe from a supplier.

According to EACC, the investigation began after a report was filed on May 16, 2025, by a supplier who had delivered an X-ray scanner worth Sh1.4 million to the hospital. The hospital had agreed to pay in three instalments and had already made the first payment of Sh500,000 on April 17, 2025.

However, the complainant later received a call from Dr. Mohammed Munyendo, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, who allegedly demanded a Sh400,000 bribe to release the second instalment of Sh650,000. The supplier also met with an administrator, Braxides Bunoro, who reportedly insisted on the same demand.

Although the hospital deposited the second instalment into the supplier’s KCB account, the funds could not be accessed. The supplier continued to receive calls from Dr. Munyendo, Mrs. Bunoro, Mmasava, and Kavaya, all allegedly pressuring for a bribe before the payment could be cleared.

“Following the report, EACC investigators mounted an operation on May 21, 2025, that resulted in the arrest of William Mmasava and Linet Kavaya at KCB Mumias branch shortly after they received a bribe of Sh200,000 from the complainant,” said the Commission.

The two suspects were taken to EACC’s Western Regional Office in Bungoma for processing and were later booked at Bungoma Police Station. They are currently in custody as investigations continue.
