Eliud Owalo has resigned from his position as Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Delivery and Government Efficiency in the Office of the President after declaring his intention to run for president in the 2027 General Election.
Owalo announced his resignation on Sunday through a post on X, saying his continued stay in government was no longer appropriate after declaring his presidential ambitions.
“Following my declaration earlier today that I intend to run for Presidency of the Republic of Kenya in the year 2027, my position as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Delivery and Government Efficiency is no longer tenable. I have therefore resigned from the position with immediate effect,” Owalo said.
Owalo now joins a growing list of leaders who have expressed interest in the 2027 race, including former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and President William Ruto, who is expected to seek re-election.
Presidential Bid Announced

Owalo made his presidential declaration during the 106th commemoration of the death of his grandfather, Prophet Johanna Owalo, the founder of the Nomiya Church. The event was held at the church’s headquarters in Oboch, Kisumu County.
“Come 2027, I will submit myself as a candidate for the presidency of the Republic of Kenya,” Owalo told the congregation.
He said his decision was guided by his record as “a performer, a results-oriented person and a risk-taker,” qualities he believes qualify him to lead the country.
Owalo’s declaration marks a new chapter in his political journey. Over the years, he has worked closely with several senior political leaders, including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi, and most recently President William Ruto.
He said he is now moving away from supporting individual leaders to focusing on development issues that directly affect Kenyans.
Speaking after the church service, Owalo urged residents of the Nyanza region to embrace what he described as “a politics of action rather than rhetoric.”
He outlined several development priorities, including the expansion of water infrastructure such as the Koru–Soin dams to address flooding, support power generation, improve water access, and strengthen food security.
Owalo also emphasized the need to complete the Lake Victoria Ring Road to connect Busia to Migori, saying the project would boost regional trade and improve cross-border business with Uganda and Tanzania.
On economic growth, he called for the upgrading of Kisumu International Airport to handle cargo flights, allowing the region to export fish, agricultural produce, and other goods directly to international markets.
He further proposed the establishment of processing factories for fish, livestock products, hides and skins, potatoes, avocados, tea, coffee, and soapstone to promote value addition within the region.
Owalo also spoke in support of multi-party democracy in Nyanza, saying the 2010 Constitution guarantees political diversity and competitive leadership.
He said the region should embrace open political competition to strengthen democracy and development.
