Eros Ramazzotti, born Eros Luciano Walter Ramazzotti Molina on October 28, 1963, in the Cinecittà neighborhood of Rome, Italy, is one of the most celebrated Italian pop and rock singer-songwriters of his generation.

Named after the Greek god of love, Ramazzotti grew up in a modest family environment that fostered his early passion for music.

His father, Rodolfo Ramazzotti, a construction worker and music enthusiast who played the piano, encouraged his son’s creative pursuits by helping him compose songs during his teenage years.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, he has sold over 70 million records, establishing himself as a global icon particularly popular in Europe, Latin America, and among Italian diaspora communities.

Beyond music, Ramazzotti has dabbled in acting and philanthropy, including his involvement with the Italian singers’ national football team, where he served as president from 1992 to 2004 and scored 127 goals in 222 charity matches.

    Siblings

Eros has one sibling, his younger brother Marco Ramazzotti, who has largely stayed out of the public eye despite the family’s rise to fame.

Born into a close-knit household with parents Rodolfo and Raffaella Molina, the brothers shared a supportive upbringing in Rome.

When Eros secured his first record contract with the label DDD in 1981 following his performance at the Castrocaro music contest, he moved to Milan along with Marco and their mother to pursue his burgeoning career.

    Career

Ramazzotti’s career ignited in 1981 when, at just 17, he entered the Voci Nuove di Castrocaro contest with his self-written song “Rock 80,” earning a contract with the fledgling label DDD.

His debut single, “Ad un amico,” released in 1982, met with modest reception, but mentorship from producer Renato Brioschi paved the way for his breakthrough.

In 1984, Ramazzotti debuted at the prestigious Sanremo Music Festival with “Terra promessa” from his first album Cuori agitati, marking his entry into the Italian pop scene.

The following year, “Una storia importante” from the same album became a massive hit, selling a million copies in France alone and propelling him across Europe.

Victory at Sanremo in 1986 with “Adesso tu” from Nuovi eroi solidified his stardom, followed by a nine-month tour that drew over a million fans.

Albums like In certi momenti (1987), Musica è (1988), and In ogni senso (1990) expanded his reach, with the latter attempting a U.S. breakthrough that included sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall.

By the mid-1990s, Ramazzotti founded his own label, Radiorama, and self-produced Dove c’è musica (1996), which sold six million copies worldwide.

Collaborations with international stars such as Tina Turner, Cher, Joe Cocker, and Carlos Santana defined his evolution, blending Italian balladry with global pop-rock influences.

Key releases like Eros (1997), Stilelibero (2000), 9 (2003), Calma apparente (2005), and the compilation e² (2007) topped charts across continents.

His live performances, including massive European and world tours, have become legendary, with 2022’s World Tour Première showcasing him in iconic venues from Seville to Athens.

    Accolades

Ramazzotti has clinched the Sanremo Festival top prize twice—first in 1986 with “Adesso tu” and later cementing his legacy as Italy’s premier balladeer.

Internationally, Ramazzotti has been honored as Best Italian Artist at the World Music Awards on three occasions (1997, 2001, and 2004), alongside a 2003 win for Best Italian Pop/Rock Male Artist.

Germany’s Echo Music Awards recognized him as Best International Male Artist in 1998 and 1999, while a 2011 Golden Camera award celebrated his global influence in the Best Music International category.

His albums have amassed countless certifications: In ogni senso (1990) earned Platinum status in Germany, triple Platinum in Switzerland, and Platinum in the Netherlands.

Dove c’è musica (1996) achieved multi-Platinum sales worldwide. Compilations like Eros (1997) surpassed 10 million units.

Additional accolades include a Premio Lo Nuestro in 1997, MTV Europe Music Award nominations, and a 2002 Italian Music Award for Best Music Video for “Per me per sempre.”
