The family of Chinese tourist killed in Lake Naivasha by a hippopotamus will be paid a sum of Ksh25.5 million in compensation, the court has ruled.

Luo Yi, 28, was attacked by the animal while on her stay at Sun African Limited Hotel in Naivasha, then trading as Lake Naivasha Country Club.

The incidence is said to have happened on April 21, 2013, the same day she checked into the hotel. She sustained injuries that are said to have resulted to her death.

The hotel however, in court submissions, argued that the Chinese provoked the hippo before it attacked her.

Lady Justice Jackline Kamau in her judgement partly bought the argument, saying that there was neglect in the part of the deceased.

The court however ruled that it is the sole responsibility of the hotel to ensure that all its clients are protected.

Last year, two people including a Chinese national were killed by hippos in two different incidents in Lake Naivasha.

In the first case, a Chinese national identified as Chuang Hun was in the company of friends taking pictures on the shore of the lake when the hippo attacked.

In the second incidence, a fisherman was attacked by another hippo a few kilometers from the scene of the first incident.

According to the chairman of Lake Naivasha Boat Owners Association, David Kilo the rise in water levels had contributed to hippo attacks.

“The hippo that attacked the Chinese was seeking pasture near the hotel when the incident occurred and this is not the first time,” he said.
