Federica Brignone is a prominent Italian alpine ski racer, widely recognized as one of the most accomplished and versatile female skiers in the sport’s modern era.

Born on July 14, 1990, in Milan, Italy, and raised in the Aosta Valley region, she comes from a deeply skiing-oriented family.

Her mother, Maria Rosa Quario, was a successful World Cup skier in the late 1970s and early 1980s, specializing in slalom with four World Cup victories and multiple podiums, while her father, Daniele Brignone, worked as a ski instructor and early coach.

This environment immersed Brignone in the sport from childhood, leading her to begin skiing at a very young age and eventually pursue a professional career across all alpine disciplines.

    Siblings

Federica has one sibling, an older brother named Davide Brignone.

The two share an exceptionally close and inseparable bond, often described as a unique sibling relationship that blends family support with professional collaboration.

Davide has been integral to her team since around 2016-2017, attending nearly every race, providing technical guidance, motivation, and emotional support.

    Career

Brignone’s career took off early, with her debut in the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup coming as a teenager.

She quickly established herself as a multi-discipline threat, competing effectively in downhill, super-G, giant slalom, slalom, and combined events.

Early highlights included strong junior performances and her first World Cup podiums in the 2010s.

Brignone faced setbacks, such as ankle surgery in 2012 that sidelined her for part of a season, but she persevered and broke through significantly in the late 2010s.

Her breakthrough came in the 2019-2020 season when she claimed the overall World Cup crystal globe, becoming the first Italian woman to achieve this prestigious title.

She has continued to excel, adding more discipline titles and consistent top finishes.

Brignone has competed in multiple Winter Olympics, earning medals in giant slalom and combined.

Despite a serious injury in April 2025, including an ACL tear and multiple fractures in her left leg during the Italian championships, she has shown remarkable resilience, with her brother Davide expressing confidence in her potential return for events like the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics.

    Accolades

Brignone has secured two FIS Alpine Ski World Cup overall titles (2019-2020 and 2024-2025), making her the oldest skier (male or female) to win the overall crown in the latter season.

She has claimed five discipline crystal globes across giant slalom, super-G, combined, and others between 2020 and 2025.

With 37 World Cup race victories and over 85 podium finishes across disciplines, she stands as Italy’s most successful female World Cup skier ever.

On the Olympic stage, Brignone has earned three medals: bronze in giant slalom at the 2018 PyeongChang Games, silver in giant slalom and bronze in alpine combined at the 2022 Beijing Games.

At the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, she has collected five medals, including two golds (notably in giant slalom) and three silvers.

Additional honors include being named skier of the year by the International Association of Ski Journalists in 2020 and 2025, along with her pioneering achievements as the first Italian woman to win the World Cup overall title.
