Fernando Javier Rovzar Diez-Barroso, professionally known as Fernando Rovzar, is a prominent Mexican filmmaker, producer, director, screenwriter, and actor born on January 24, 1980, in Mexico City.
Hailing from a family with deep roots in the media industry as great-grandchildren of Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta, the founder of Televisa, Rovzar has carved out his own legacy in both film and television.
He graduated from Boston University’s College of Communication in 2004 with a degree in Film and Television, marking the beginning of a career that blends creative storytelling with commercial success.
Rovzar is recognized for his versatile contributions to Mexican cinema and streaming content, often exploring themes of family dynamics, crime, and social issues.
Siblings
Fernando has an older brother, Guillermo Fernando Rovzar Diez Barroso, commonly known as Billy Rovzar, who was born on October 10, 1976, in Mexico City.
Billy, a fellow producer and writer, has been Fernando’s primary collaborator since their early days in the industry.
The brothers co-founded their production company, Lemon Studios, in 2003, when Fernando was just 23 years old, laying the foundation for a prolific partnership that has spanned films, television series, and theater productions.
Career
Rovzar’s career ignited with the establishment of Lemon Studios alongside his brother Billy in 2003, transitioning quickly from short films to feature-length productions.
His debut as a producer came with the 2004 cult hit Matando Cabos, a dark comedy that became a box-office success and launched the studio’s reputation for edgy, genre-bending narratives.
This was followed by the horror thriller Kilómetro 31 in 2006, inspired by the Mexican legend of La Llorona, which grossed over $15 million domestically and revitalized the local horror genre.

By the late 2000s, Rovzar had amassed credits on more than 20 films, including the critically acclaimed Después de Lucía (2012), directed by Michel Franco, which delved into themes of bullying and trauma.
Venturing into television in 2008, Rovzar expanded his role as writer and director with projects like the horror anthology 13 Fears for Televisa, the medical drama Paramédicos for Canal Once, and the HBO series Sr. Ávila, a gritty crime drama about a hitman turned family man.
The pivot to streaming platforms marked a new era; in 2018, he directed and co-wrote the Netflix series Monarca, a family saga set in the tequila industry, while executive producing the teen thriller Control Z, which became a global hit.
Recent endeavors include directing episodes of the MGM+ series Hotel Cocaine and creating Women in Blue (also known as Las Azules) for Apple TV+, a 10-episode crime drama inspired by the true story of Mexico City’s first female police force in 1971.
As co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Lemon Studios, Rovzar continues to oversee a diverse slate, including upcoming films like Mexico’s Most Wanted and the sequel Kilómetro 31 – Part 2, blending his passion for visual storytelling with innovative production across mediums.
Accolades
Rovzar’s production of Sr. Ávila culminated in a prestigious International Emmy Award in 2017 for Best Non-English Language U.S. Primetime Program, making it the first win for an HBO Latin America original series and highlighting his skill in crafting complex, character-driven narratives.
This accolade was shared with collaborators including his brother Billy and executive producers Roberto Ríos and Luis F. Peraza.
Earlier, films like Kilómetro 31 secured five Ariel Awards from the Mexican Academy of Cinematography, including Best Picture and Best Director, cementing its status as a landmark in Mexican cinema.
Rovzar’s work on Después de Lucía contributed to director Michel Franco’s Un Certain Regard prize at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, underscoring the global reach of Lemon Studios’ output.
