Fisherman drowns in Lake Victoria while fleeing beach patrol
A 30-year-old fisherman drowned in Lake Victoria after reportedly diving into the water while fleeing a beach patrol team in the Ngegu Beach area, Rangwe Sub-County.
The deceased, identified as Evans Okoth Ager, had left Ngegu Beach at around 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, for a fishing expedition with four colleagues.
According to police, the group was fishing within a protected fish-breeding area when they were confronted by a beach patrol team. The fishermen reportedly dived into the lake, after which Ager failed to return.
His colleagues subsequently mounted a search for him.
At around 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, the deceased’s body was recovered from the lake within the Ngegu Beach area by members of the public.
Police officers visited and processed the scene.
The body was moved to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting postmortem examination.
Police reported that there were no visible external injuries, although blood was observed oozing from the mouth.
Meanwhile, a 22-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death by his brother-in-law following a dispute over Sh1,500 in Nkonde area, Tharaka South Sub-County.
The deceased was identified as Felix Mwendwa Kibuye. His brother-in-law is alleged to have stabbed him during a confrontation over money.
Kibuye had gone fishing and, while returning home, passed by his sister’s residence to collect Sh1,500 owed to him.
The two reportedly disagreed over the payment, and the argument escalated into a physical fight.
The victim’s body, which had a stab wound to the left side of the chest, was moved to Marimanti Level 4 Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting postmortem examination.
Police said no arrest had been made and the suspected weapon had not been recovered as of the time of the report.
