At least five passengers were killed on the spot and four others injured after a matatu collided with a stalled truck along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.
The accident occurred early Saturday morning at about 4:50am at the Twin Bridge area and involved a Toyota Hiace matatu operated by Kapsowar Sacco and a Mercedes-Benz truck, according to police.
Police said the matatu was travelling from Nairobi towards Eldoret when it reached the scene and rammed into the rear of the truck, which had stalled on the climbing lane.
The impact killed five passengers whose identities had not been established by the time of the report.
Four other passengers sustained injuries in the crash and were rushed to Londiani Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
The bodies of the five victims were moved to the Londiani Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examinations.
Police officers visited the scene and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The incident comes amid continued concerns over road safety along major highways, where stalled heavy vehicles and poor visibility during early morning hours can pose significant risks to motorists and passengers.
On Friday night, 12 people were killed in separate accidents.
They included five riders, five passengers and a driver while at least 13 others were injured in the accidents, police said.
