Brazil is voting today, and the prediction markets have a clear favorite: Flavio Bolsonaro. On Polymarket, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro sits at about 63% odds of winning. President Lula sits at about 37%.

That gap looks huge. It is not a poll. Prediction markets are banned in Brazil, and they measure money placed on outcomes, not a scientific sample of voters. The final traditional polls showed a statistical tie between Lula and Flavio. So the 63% is a betting line, not a verdict from the electorate.

The candidates could hardly be more different. Lula is the left-wing incumbent. His government runs Bolsa Família, the cash-transfer program that puts money in the hands of poor families. Just before the election, benefits were raised by 15%. Supporters call it essential relief. Opponents call it an election-year move to buy votes.

Flavio Bolsonaro is the right-wing son of Jair Bolsonaro, the former president convicted for his role in the January 8, 2023, attacks in Brasília. On that day, Bolsonaro supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace. It happened two years and two days after the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The legal aftermath split the two countries. In the United States, Donald Trump was not convicted for January 6. In Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to more than 27 years and is now under house arrest on health grounds.

So today’s election is about more than two names. It is about Lula’s welfare spending, the Bolsonaro legacy, and the memory of January 8. The markets lean toward Flavio. The polls point to a tie. The voters will settle it.
