Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has on Monday taken to social media to expressed his disappointment over how corruption cases are being handled as two former Kenya-Re managers got sentenced.

Sharing on his social media platforms, Sonko noted that the fight against corruption is being fought selectively.

“I always say the fight against corruption is fought selectively for some other special thieves not to be exposed,” he mentioned.

Captioning a video of the former managers being sentenced, Sonko lamented that in as much as the judiciary has sentenced the managers, the ‘main beneficiary of the stolen loot’ is yet to be arrested.

Sonko also pointed an accusing finger to the media as he claims that despite their presence at the court during the sentencing, none has been able to report the ruling of the judge concerning that corruption case.

“No media house has covered this despite their presence in court since morning,” he mentioned.

According to Sonko, this is however not the first time former Kenya-Re managers have been sentenced and gone unreported.

He alleges that in April another former manager of the company was “sentenced to 5 years imprisonment in a Mombasa court and no one covered the case.”

Additionally, Sonko asserted that even if the media will not highlight such cases, he will use his platforms to inform netizens of the happenings.

The two, former Finance Director John Faustin Kinyua and ex-Heritage Insurance Reinsurance Manager Charles Gichane were fined Ksh7.3m each for defrauding Kenya Re of a house in Embakasi’s Villa Franca estate in 2003.

Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi gave the duo 14 days to appeal to the case.

The former managers were among others including the firm’s former boss Jackson Githaka who was arrested last year over the fradulent acquisition of public property.

Appearing before the Anti-Corruption court soon after their arrests, Githaka was accused of illegally obtaining Ksh7.26 million paid to Kenya Re by United Insurance Corporation.

According to submissions made, the payment was made under statutory management of Kenya Reinsurance Corporation and was purported to be agency fees.
