The government has designated Friday, October 17, 2025, as a public holiday in memory of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, who passed away while undergoing treatment in India.
According to Gazette Notice No. 15007 ssued on Thursday, Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen made the declaration pursuant to Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act (Cap 110).
“It is hereby notified for public information that, by virtue of the powers granted under Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares Friday, 17th October 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga,” the notice stated.
A state funeral service is scheduled to take place at Nyayo Stadium on the same day.
The announcement follows days of national mourning for the respected opposition figure and long-serving statesman, whose passing has prompted widespread tributes from leaders across the political spectrum and from international dignitaries.
Flags across the country have been lowered to half-mast since Wednesday, following the official confirmation of Raila Odinga’s death. Condolence books have been made available in government buildings, Kenyan embassies abroad, and ODM party offices for citizens and dignitaries to pay their respects.
Meanwhile, arrangements are in progress to bring Odinga’s body home from India. A national funeral committee is expected to release the full burial program after consultations with the family.
The decision to declare a national holiday aims to give Kenyans the opportunity to honour and reflect on Odinga’s enduring legacy as one of the country’s most influential leaders and a steadfast advocate for democracy, constitutional change, and social justice.
Raila, aged 80, served as Kenya’s second Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 under the Grand Coalition Government, which was formed after the disputed 2007 presidential election. A seasoned politician, he made five presidential bids and was the long-time leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen noted that the government will continue to collaborate closely with the Odinga family to ensure the former Prime Minister receives a dignified state farewell that reflects his stature as a national statesman.
