The Las Vegas Raiders have made a bold move to reset their franchise, agreeing to a five-year contract worth up to $172 million with veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins.

The headline figure is eye-catching, but the structure tells a more strategic story. Only $20 million is guaranteed, making the deal far more flexible than it appears on paper. In reality, it functions as a short-term bridge while the team develops its future quarterback.

A Strategic Rebuild in Las Vegas

The signing comes after a disastrous 2025 campaign that saw the Raiders collapse following an opening win over the New England Patriots. Las Vegas went on to lose 14 of its next 15 games, ultimately securing the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft.

That pick is widely expected to be used on a franchise quarterback—reportedly Fernando Mendoza—with Cousins brought in as a veteran mentor and immediate starter.

    How the Deal Works

Despite the $172 million ceiling, Cousins is unlikely to earn the full amount. For the 2026 season:

    • The Raiders will pay him roughly $1.3 million (veteran minimum)
    • The Atlanta Falcons remain responsible for about $8.7 million, thanks to offset language from his previous contract
    • Cousins is also guaranteed $10 million in 2027, whether he stays or is released

The deal includes a two-year, $80 million option, giving Las Vegas flexibility depending on performance and the development of their rookie quarterback.

    A Financial Masterclass

The contract adds another chapter to Cousins’ reputation as one of the smartest earners in NFL history. With career earnings already exceeding $320 million, he ranks among the league’s top all-time earners—despite never reaching a Super Bowl.

His financial success has been driven by calculated decisions, including his historic fully guaranteed deal with the Minnesota Vikings and a previous $180 million contract with Atlanta.

Notably, this latest deal extends a remarkable streak—Cousins has now secured 11 consecutive seasons of fully guaranteed salary, an unprecedented feat in the NFL, widely credited to his agent Mike McCartney of Vayner Sports.

    Performance Questions Remain

While financially savvy, Cousins enters this new chapter with on-field concerns. His stint in Atlanta saw a dip in production, including a league-high 16 interceptions in 2024 and a midseason benching in 2025 in favor of Michael Penix Jr..

He also continues to recover from a 2023 Achilles injury suffered during his time with the Vikings.

For the Raiders, the move offers a low-risk, high-upside solution: a proven veteran to stabilize the offense while grooming a potential franchise quarterback.

For Cousins, it’s yet another lucrative chapter in a career defined as much by financial strategy as by on-field consistency.
