Gabriel Johan Gudmundsson is a Swedish professional footballer born on 29 April 1999 in Malmö, Sweden.

He primarily plays as a left-back, though he has also featured in midfield or as a centre-back.

He currently represents Premier League club Leeds United and the Sweden national team.

The son of former Swedish international and Premier League player Niklas Gudmundsson, who appeared for clubs including Halmstads BK, Blackburn Rovers, Ipswich Town, and Malmö FF, Gabriel grew up immersed in football.

He began his youth career with Snöstorp Nyhem FF before progressing through the ranks at Halmstads BK, the club strongly associated with his family.

Siblings

Gabriel has one sibling, a younger brother named Johan Gudmundsson.

Born on 15 September 2002, Johan is also a professional footballer who plays as a right winger or attacking player.

Like his older brother and father, Johan came through the youth system at Halmstads BK after starting at Snöstorp Nyhem FF.

He has competed in Sweden’s lower divisions, including spells with Halmstads BK’s youth and reserve sides, Tvååkers IF, and Ängelholms FF, before joining Trelleborgs FF.

Career

Gudmundsson made his senior debut for Halmstads BK in 2016 while the club was in the Superettan, Sweden’s second tier.

He contributed to their promotion efforts and established himself in Allsvenskan, scoring several goals in his early years as an attacking player before transitioning more fully into a defensive role.

In 2019 he moved to the Netherlands with FC Groningen, where he gained experience in the Eredivisie over two seasons.

In August 2021 he signed for French side Lille OSC, remaining there until 2025 and featuring regularly in Ligue 1 as well as European competitions, including the UEFA Champions League and Conference League.

In July 2025 he completed a transfer to Leeds United in the Premier League, signing a multi-year deal and taking the number 3 shirt.

He has been a regular starter for the club.

On the international stage, after representing Sweden at various youth levels (U17, U19, and U21), he earned his senior debut in June 2022 in a UEFA Nations League match against Serbia.

He has since accumulated numerous caps, participated in World Cup qualifying, and was named in Sweden’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, starting matches during the tournament.

Accolades

While Gudmundsson has not collected major senior club trophies, he has achieved notable recognition.

Early in his career he was the top scorer in the Folksam U21 Allsvenskan Södra with five goals.

At Lille he gained valuable experience in European competitions.

With Leeds United he was voted the Leeds United Supporters’ Trust Paul Madeley Player of the Year for the 2025/26 season after strong performances that contributed to the team’s Premier League campaign.

Internationally, his consistent selection for Sweden and involvement in the nation’s qualification for and participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup stand as significant career milestones.
