Police in Kitutu Central Sub-county, Kisii County, are investigating a brutal murder incident in which an eight-year-old girl was allegedly hacked to death by her uncle before an angry mob torched the suspect’s house.

According to the police, the incident occurred at Nyamatuta Village in Bigege Sub-location on May 19.

Police officers established that the suspect, aged 32, allegedly attacked and fatally injured an eight-year-old Grade Two pupil at Etoora Academy.

The child had reportedly gone home for lunch and was returning to school when she was attacked.

She sustained a deep cut on the right side of the head and died at the scene.

Investigators said the motive behind the killing had not been immediately established, although preliminary information indicated the suspect had longstanding family disagreements with his elder brother who is the girl’s father.

After the incident, the suspect reportedly surrendered himself at Gisieka Police Post in neighbouring Marani Sub-county, where he was arrested before being transferred to Nyanchwa Police Station.

Moments later, enraged residents descended on the suspect’s home and set it ablaze, destroying property of unknown value.

The scene was processed by detectives and the body of the minor moved to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examination.

And police in Gem Yala Sub-county, Siaya County are investigating the suspected murder of an 88-year-old man who was found with severe head injuries near his home in Jina village.

The eldersly man discovered lying along the Jina–Sagam murram road, about 300 metres from his homestead, with deep cuts to the face and head on May 19.

The motive of the murder was not known.

The deceased, also identified as William Ochieng Okwacha, was said to routinely walk to the market early every market day.

On Tuesday morning at around 4:20 am, he was allegedly attacked by unknown assailants using a sharp object.

Family members and villagers rushed him to Yala Level IV Hospital, where he received first aid before doctors referred him to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.

However, while arrangements were being made to transfer him, he succumbed to the injuries at about 2:45 pm.

The body was moved to the Yala Level IV Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination as investigations continue to establish the motive behind the killing.
