Gor Mahia are eight points shy of winning the 2018 Kenyan Premier League title for a record 17th time if all factors remain constant.

This follows an emphatic 3-1 win over Kakamega Homeboyz at Kisumu’s Moi Stadium on Monday to push their points’ tally to 62 – 14 off second placed Sofapaka.

The gap to this year’s glory could narrow further on Thursday when the defending champions face floundering Chemelil Sugar FC at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.

    Kisumu triumph

Innocent Wafula opened the floodgates in Kisumu in the 31st after a lovely interplay with defender Wellington Ochieng’ on the right wing.

Burundian Mustafa Francis doubled the lead two minutes later after being put through by countrymate Karim Nizigiyimana for his maiden KPL goal since signing for the coach Dylan Kerr’s side.

Homeboyz, who are now winless in their last five outings, pulled one back after the breather from a setpiece situation in the 71st minute.

But substitute Kevin Omondi “Ade”, who came on for Mustafa, restored the two-goal cushion deep into the second half to seal the win.

Gor are now three wins away from retaining the crown they lifted last year and could secure it on 25 August against their arch rivals AFC Leopards at Kasarani Stadium.

    Stats

Since losing 2-1 to Western Stima on 2 April 2017, Gor Mahia have played in Kisumu 17 times, winning 15 and drawing 2, all in the league.

Today’s victory is the eight this year.
