Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has extended the designation of 13 areas in Marsabit County as security-disturbed and dangerous for an additional 30 days.

In a gazette notice dated December 19, 2025, Murkomen, exercising powers under Section 106(6) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, and in consultation with the National Security Council, extended the declaration that was first made on November 21, 2025.

The affected areas include Hillo Gorgora, Hillo Orofa, Hillo Walkite, Hillo Tanzania, Hillo Irress Abamartille, Hillo Gootu, Hillo Tessum Qalicha, Hillo Karray, Hillo Hudda, Hillo Qoranjido, Hillo Irress Shindia, Hillo Rabaalee, and Hillo Godde Haroressa.

“This notice shall take effect on December 23, 2025, from 6.30 p.m., for a period of thirty days and may, at any time, be withdrawn or extended further by notice in the Kenya Gazette,” the notice stated.

In the same notice, Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja prohibited residents in the affected areas from possessing firearms. The directive requires all residents to immediately surrender any firearms to the nearest police station, police post, police camp, or National Government Administration Office during daylight hours for safe custody.
