The government has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Trans Mara East and South in Narok County following violent clashes that have left at least seven people dead and more than 120 homes burnt. Hundreds of residents have been displaced.
In a gazette notice dated December 19, 2025, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen declared parts of Trans Mara West and Trans Mara South as security-disturbed and dangerous.
Affected areas include Nkaroru in Trans Mara West, and in Trans Mara South: Oldonyo-Orok, Siteti, Ololoma, Corner, Ratiki, Isokon, Kerinkani, Kondamet, Olkiloriti, Angata Barakoi, Kapkeres, Lolgorian Town, Mashangwe, and Sachangwan.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat and Administration Police Deputy IG Gilbert Masengeli Saturday said the curfew starts at 6pm as part of a special operation to restore peace. They warned that all individuals with illegal firearms have 72 hours to surrender their weapons or face legal action.
The clashes, mainly between the Maasai and Kipsigis communities, have caused widespread destruction, including the torching of homes, and displacement of over 1,800 people in just three days, according to the Kenya Red Cross Society. Children, women, and persons with disabilities are among the most affected.
During a security assessment and consultation with local leaders, elders, and community members, the deputy IGs urged peaceful coexistence and warned politicians and others against inciting violence. Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Aldi Hassan described the situation as grave, pledging firm government action against those fueling the conflict.
The violence is linked to a long-standing land boundary dispute, which has led to property worth millions being destroyed. Angata Barakoi has experienced repeated insecurity, community conflicts, and banditry. Earlier this year, at least five residents were shot by police during protests over land surveying on a disputed 6,000-acre plot.
