Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has dismissed Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s criticism of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on March 7, 2025, in Nairobi.
In a statement issued on Sunday, March 9, Nyong’o defended the pact, arguing that Kalonzo has been engaging in separate political discussions without consulting ODM. He pointed out that despite Kalonzo meeting with various leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, ODM had not raised any objections.
“I have read Kalonzo Musyoka’s remarks on the ODM-UDA agreement. His concern is that Azimio was left out and that Raila Odinga betrayed the coalition. Meanwhile, Kalonzo has been meeting with different individuals, including Rigathi Gachagua, without informing us, yet we never complained. We respect his right to political engagement,” Nyong’o stated.
The Kisumu governor clarified that the MoU aims to foster national unity and strengthen Kenya’s democratic culture. He explained that the agreement encourages all political parties to work together, regardless of their regional support bases, to build a more united country.
Nyong’o urged Kalonzo to familiarize himself with the MoU’s contents before condemning it. He also encouraged him to seek dialogue with Raila Odinga and President William Ruto for the country’s future.
“Kalonzo should first read the MoU before criticizing it. The agreement is about strengthening democracy and ensuring that all parties contribute to nation-building. There is still room for him to engage with Raila and Ruto in working towards Kenya’s progress,” he added.
Nyong’o’s response follows Kalonzo’s strong disapproval of the ODM-UDA deal. Speaking after the signing event, Kalonzo described the agreement as a betrayal of Kenyans, arguing that the Kenya Kwanza government’s policies have been widely rejected by the public.
“What has come out of KICC today is the biggest betrayal of Kenyans. The People’s Loyal Coalition will never compromise Kenyans’ trust for temporary political gains,” Kalonzo said.
