The government has commenced investigations at Shalom Hospital in Athi River, Machakos County where a woman was left to give birth at the facility’s reception while nurses enjoyed their tea.

Speaking on the suspected case of negligence amid raised concerns of maternal healthcare in the country, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua noted that the county government officials together with those of the Kenya Medical Board and Nursing board were to visit the hospital on Monday.

“Officials from my Government and the Kenya Medical Board & Nursing board will this morning visit the privately owned & managed Shalom Hospital in Athi River. We will not allow patients in any facility – Govt or otherwise – in my region, to be treated inhumanely. Watajua Hawajui,” Governor Mutua asserted.

The officials are expected to seek finding surrounding the incident that was harshly condemned by citizens and leaders alike.

Additionally, other officials from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board and Nurses Union also visited the facility.

The occurrence was allegedly captured on video by a man who had taken his wife to the hospital.

According to the man, a woman in labor was brought into the facility in a wheelchair and the three nurses on the video notified that it was an emergency case.

However, the nurses undisturbed continued to enjoy their tea, neglecting the woman despite her cry for help.

One nurse is claimed to have told the woman to stand on her feet and that was when she delivered her child, who dropped on the floor.

It was then that one of the nurses rushed to pick the baby from the floor while the other helped the mother.
