Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei was evacuated from a church event in chaos that broke out in Lugumek, Chepalungu area.

He was in the company of two Members of County Assembly when the chaos broke out on Sunday February 22 afternoon.

The senator was targeted for stabbing by an intruder but was saved by his bodyguards before being evacuated in the confusion, police said.

At least two people were injured in the drama while two vehicles belonging to the senator were damaged in the drama, police said.

The politicians had attended the first church event in AGC Lelatich which ended well.

They then proceeded Kabolwo Deliverance Church for a fundraiser.

The entourage found the road blocked by a group of youth who were cleared by police.

The group proceeded to the church where the goons intruded in chaos, witnesses said adding police moved in and dispersed them.

The police shot to the air in efforts to disperse the raging group. The protesters said they did not want the senator and his group there. There were claims the group had been sponsored by political nemesis of the senator and his team.

It was then that one of the members of the said goons, while armed with a sword managed to sneak into the church where the senator and his group were.

According to the police, he went to where Sigei was seated with an intention of harming him by his bodyguards intercepted and disarmed him.

The sword was kept as an exhibit as more chaos broke out with the senator being evacuated from the compound to Lugumek police station.

Witnesses said the leaders looked shocked following the drama.

The said suspect managed to escape the scene. The senator and his team had to be escorted from the station in a police vehicle for their safety, police said.

This is the latest trend of political chaos being witnessed in the country. The chaos has left up to four people dead in the past two months alone.

Opposition leaders say the chaos is being fanned by government officials and have challenged authorities to address the menace being replicated in most places.

Police authorities say they are investigating the cases so far reported. In some instances, goons have been embedded in police operations to target perceived political opponents, which have worsened the situation and encouraged impunity.
