Kenya’s national men’s team, Harambee Stars edged out fancied Black Stars of Ghana 1-0 in the 2019 Afcon qualifiers at the Kasarani Stadium Saturday.

First half own goal from Nicholas Opuku was all the home-boys needed to register the historic win over the four-time African champions, who are gunning for an eighth-straight Afcon qualification.

The win revives Kenya’s hopes of qualifying for the continental showpiece after losing to Sierra Leone in their first Group F outing last year.

Kenya, who last qualified for the Africa’s premium football tournament way back in 2004 in Tunisia, was meeting Ghana for the first time in a competitive match.

Stars were reduced to ten-men in the 62nd after Zambian referee Janny Sikazwe handed Gor Mahia defender Joash Onyango straight red card for fouling goal-bound Ghanaian player.

But they managed to hang on to the slim lead, warding off attack after from the star-studded Ghanaian side which had the likes of Inter Milan midfielder Kwadow Asamoah and Thomas Partey to emerge victorious.

Kenya will next face Ethiopia, who face Sierra Leone in the other group match Sunday in Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia lost 5-0 to Ghana in their group opener last year in Kumasi, Ghana.
