Heather Clare Knight, known by the nickname Trev, is an English former professional cricketer and the former captain of the England women’s cricket team.
Born on 26 December 1990 in Rochdale, she grew up in Plymouth, Devon, after her family relocated there when she was young.
A right-handed batter and occasional right-arm off-break bowler, she made her international debut in 2010 and went on to become one of the most accomplished players in the women’s game.
She studied biomedical sciences at Cardiff University after turning down a place at Cambridge to prioritise cricket.
Knight captained England from 2016 until 2025 and announced her retirement from international cricket in 2026 following a Test match against India at Lord’s, concluding a 16-year career with a record number of appearances for England Women.
Siblings
Heather has one sibling, an elder brother named Steve Knight, who is approximately three years older than her.
The two grew up playing cricket together in the backyard and at Plymstock Cricket Club in Plymouth.
Steve was the one who first drew Heather into the sport; she followed him to the local club as a child and often played alongside him in boys’ and men’s teams.

Career
Knight began playing cricket at the age of eight with Plymstock Cricket Club, progressing through the youth ranks and into the men’s first XI in the Devon League, where she was often the only female player.
She represented Devon before moving to Berkshire for higher-level county cricket.
Her international career started with an ODI debut against India in March 2010, followed by a T20I debut later that year and a Test debut against Australia in 2011.
She became a regular in the England side and was appointed vice-captain before succeeding Charlotte Edwards as captain in 2016.
Under her leadership England won the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup at Lord’s.
Domestically and in franchise cricket she played for teams including Western Storm, winning the Women’s Cricket Super League in 2017 and 2019, Hobart Hurricanes, Sydney Thunder, London Spirit, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women’s Premier League.
Across formats she scored nearly 8,000 international runs, including centuries in all three formats, the first England player, male or female, to achieve that feat, and took useful wickets with her off-spin.
Accolades
Knight was awarded an OBE in the 2018 New Year Honours for services to cricket following the World Cup triumph.
In 2018 she was named one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year. She has received the Walter Lawrence Women’s Award on multiple occasions.
She also holds several records, including becoming the first player to score a half-century and take five wickets in the same Women’s ODI.
