A group of farmers is counting losses after a herd of elephants invaded their farm and destroyed food crops worth thousands of shillings in Merti, Isiolo County.

Police and Kenya Wildlife Service personnel visited the scene in the Shauriyako area and announced it was one of the rising cases of human-wildlife conflict.

The animals destroyed kales on half an acre, spinach on an acre, tomatoes on two acres, and watermelon on half an acre.

The land belonged to two local self-help groups. The animals also damaged a main water pipe before leaving the scene.

Cases of human-wildlife conflict have been on the rise amid efforts to contain the trend. This has prompted officials to translocate some of the animals behind the trend. Some animals have killed locals in the incidents which has prompted the government to announce a compensation scheme to stem further conflicts.

Meanwhile, in Murungaru area, Nyandarua, suspected thieves killed three sheep and stole seven others from a home.

It is not clear what motivated the gang to kill the animals.

Police were called to the scene and announced they are investigating the same.

And in Mbooni, Makueni County, a body of a man was found partially mauled by wild animals after a suspected murder.

The man was later identified as Kimathi Muli, 37. Police said they are investigating how he died. The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other investigations.

The motive of the murder, if any, is yet to be known, police said.

In Kiwanjani area, Isiolo Town, a teenage girl was electrocuted in an incident.

Police said the 15-year-old girl was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.

It was established that a motorcycle rider had connected the motorcycle to the power supply for security reasons when the girl, oblivious of the dangers it posed, touched it.

The girl was electrocuted, collapsed and died on the spot before she was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said they are investigating the incident.
