How To Air Fry Chips

Air frying chips is a healthier, faster alternative to deep-frying, offering crispy results with minimal oil. Whether you’re using fresh potatoes or frozen chips, an air fryer can help you achieve that golden crunch without the mess of hot oil. With the right method, your chips can be just as tasty—if not better—than traditional fried ones. Here is how to air fry chips.

Using Fresh Potatoes

If you’re making chips from scratch, start by selecting good-quality potatoes like Russet or Maris Piper. These types are ideal for frying due to their high starch content.

  1. Peel and Cut the Potatoes
Wash, peel (optional), and cut your potatoes into even-sized chips or fries. Uniform thickness ensures they cook evenly.
  2. Soak in Water
Place the cut potatoes in cold water for 20–30 minutes to remove excess starch. This helps them crisp up better when air fried.
  3. Dry and Season
Drain and pat the potatoes dry with a clean towel. Toss them with 1–2 teaspoons of oil and season with salt, pepper, or any preferred spices.
  4. Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheat your air fryer to 180°C (356°F) or 200°C (392°F), depending on the model.
  5. Air Fry the Chips
Place the chips in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Cook for 15–20 minutes, shaking the basket every 5–7 minutes to ensure even cooking.
  6. Check for Doneness
Chips are ready when they’re golden brown and crispy on the outside. If needed, cook for a few more minutes to reach the desired crunch.

Using Frozen Chips

For frozen chips, there’s no need to thaw or add oil.

  1. Preheat the Air Fryer
Set the air fryer to 200°C (392°F).
  2. Place in the Basket
Add the frozen chips directly into the basket. Avoid overcrowding to allow for proper air circulation.
  3. Cook and Shake
Air fry for 15–18 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Some thicker-cut chips may need a few extra minutes.
  4. Season After Cooking
Sprinkle with salt or seasoning immediately after cooking while the chips are hot.
