How to Calculate My Golf Handicap

How to Calculate My Golf Handicap

A golf handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer’s playing ability that allows players of different skill levels to compete fairly. Under the World Handicap System (WHS), your handicap is based on your best recent scores rather than your average score. Learning how to calculate your golf handicap helps you track your improvement, participate in competitions, and compare your performance with golfers around the world. While golf clubs and handicap systems often calculate it automatically, understanding the process is useful.

  1. Record Your Golf Scores

Begin by keeping a record of your scores from eligible rounds played on rated golf courses.

The more scores you submit, the more accurate your handicap will be. Ideally, submit at least 20 scorecards to establish a reliable Handicap Index.

  1. Find the Course Rating and Slope Rating

Each golf course has a Course Rating and a Slope Rating, which measure the course’s difficulty.

These values are usually displayed on the scorecard or provided by the golf club.

  1. Calculate the Score Differential

For each round played, calculate your Score Differential using the World Handicap System formula:

Score Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating

For example, if:

Then:

Score Differential = (90 − 72.5) × 113 ÷ 125

Score Differential = 15.82

  1. Determine Your Handicap Index

Once you have submitted enough scores, the World Handicap System uses the lowest 8 Score Differentials from your most recent 20 rounds to calculate your Handicap Index.

The average of those lowest differentials becomes your Handicap Index after the required calculations and rounding.

  1. Calculate Your Course Handicap

Before playing a specific course, convert your Handicap Index into a Course Handicap using the course’s Slope Rating.

The formula is:

Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113)

This gives the number of handicap strokes you receive on that course.
