An iron plate can accumulate burnt residue from fabrics, starch, or mineral deposits over time. This buildup can cause sticking, stains, and uneven ironing. Toothpaste is a simple household product that can help remove these marks effectively. It contains mild abrasives that clean without scratching the iron plate. Below is a clear guide on how to clean an iron plate using toothpaste safely.

    1. Unplug and Cool the Iron
Safety comes first. Make sure the iron is unplugged and completely cool before you begin cleaning. A hot iron can cause burns and may melt toothpaste, making the process messy.
    2. Apply a Thin Layer of Toothpaste
Squeeze a small amount of white, non-gel toothpaste onto the iron plate. Avoid gel or colored toothpaste because they may leave stains. Spread the toothpaste with your fingers or a soft cloth, focusing on burnt or dirty areas.
    3. Let It Sit for a Few Minutes
Allow the toothpaste to stay on the iron plate for about 5 to 10 minutes. This gives it time to break down the residue stuck on the metal surface.
    4. Scrub Gently With a Soft Cloth
Use a damp microfiber cloth or sponge to rub the toothpaste in circular motions. The mild abrasives help lift burnt marks and dirt. Avoid using hard brushes or metal scrapers as they may scratch the plate.
    5. Wipe Off Toothpaste Completely
Dampen a clean cloth with water and wipe away all toothpaste. Make sure there is no residue left, especially around steam holes. If residue remains, it may stick to clothes during ironing.
    6. Clean Steam Holes With a Cotton Bud
If toothpaste gets into the steam holes, gently clean them using a cotton bud dipped in water. This prevents blockages that can affect steam function later.
    7. Heat the Iron and Test It
Plug the iron in and set it to a low temperature. Iron an old towel or cloth to remove any leftover moisture or traces of toothpaste. This also helps restore the smooth glide of the plate.
    8. Repeat the Process if Needed
If stubborn burns remain, you can repeat steps until the plate is clean and shiny. Some marks may require multiple attempts depending on the level of buildup.
