Instagram is not only a platform for sharing photos and videos but also a widely used messaging tool. If your Instagram Direct inbox is cluttered with old or unwanted conversations, you might want to clear them for privacy or organization. Fortunately, Instagram allows you to delete chats, although it doesn’t offer a “clear all” function—you’ll need to remove each conversation individually. Here’s how to clear a chat on Instagram step by step.

    1. Open the Instagram App

Start by launching the Instagram app on your phone. Make sure you’re logged into the account where you want to clear the chat.

    1. Go to Your Direct Messages

Tap on the paper airplane icon (or the Messenger icon, depending on your version) in the top-right corner of your home feed. This will take you to the Direct Messages section, where you’ll see all your ongoing conversations.

    1. Locate the Chat You Want to Clear

Scroll through the list to find the conversation you wish to delete. You can use the search bar at the top to search by the person’s name if there are too many messages.

    1. Delete the Chat (iPhone and Android)
    • On iPhone: Swipe left on the conversation you want to delete, then tap “Delete.”
    • On Android: Tap and hold the chat, then select “Delete” from the pop-up options.

A confirmation will appear asking if you’re sure you want to delete the chat. Tap “Delete” again to confirm.

Note: Deleting the chat only removes it from your side. The other person in the conversation will still have access to the messages unless they also delete the chat.

    1. Unsending Specific Messages (Optional)

If you don’t want to delete the entire chat, but only a specific message within a conversation, open the chat, tap and hold the message, then choose “Unsend.” This removes the message from both sides of the conversation.

    1. Clear Multiple Chats (Manually)

Instagram doesn’t currently offer a bulk delete option. To clear several conversations, you’ll need to repeat the above process for each one manually.
