A clean credit record makes life easier because lenders trust you more and services like contracts become easier to access. When your credit report shows missed payments, defaults or judgments, it can feel like a big obstacle. The good news is that you can improve your record and remove information that is outdated or incorrect. Clearing a credit record is a process, but every step you take helps you move forward.

    1. Get Your Credit Report from All Bureaus

Start by getting your credit report from the major bureaus in South Africa such as TransUnion, Experian and XDS. You are allowed one free credit report each year from each bureau. Go through all the details including accounts, loans, judgments and debt review flags. Make notes of anything that looks wrong or unfamiliar to you.

    1. Look for Errors and Dispute Them

If you find incorrect listings like debts you already settled or wrong personal information, contact the bureau to dispute them. You must provide documents such as your ID and proof of payment. The bureau must investigate and either correct or remove the listing if it cannot be verified. This process usually takes a few weeks, but it is one of the quickest ways to clean your record.

    1. Pay Any Outstanding Debts

Listings like defaults stay on your report only as long as the debt is unpaid. Settle any outstanding balances with creditors. Once paid, ask for a paid-up letter. Send this proof to the bureaus so they can update your status to show the debt is cleared. When updated, the negative effect of that listing reduces significantly.

    1. Resolve Court Judgments

A court judgment remains on your credit record for many years unless you take action. After paying the debt, request a consent to rescind from the creditor or seek help from an attorney to remove the judgment from your name. When the court confirms the rescission, send the documents to the credit bureaus to update your record.

    1. Check for Prescribed Debt

Sometimes old debt cannot be legally collected anymore if the creditor has taken no action for a long time. This is called prescription. If a debt is prescribed, it should not appear as an active or collectible debt on your report. You may challenge such listings and request removal. Always confirm the rules before relying on prescription.

    1. Avoid Scams That Promise Quick Fixes

Be careful of companies that promise to clear negative listings even if the information is true. No one can legally remove accurate information before its expiry period. You can follow the correct legal process on your own without paying large fees. Focus on correcting errors and settling debts instead of looking for shortcuts.

    1. Maintain Good Credit Behaviour

Once you start improving your report, keep building a healthy profile.

    • Pay everything on time including store cards, loans and phone contracts
    • Reduce outstanding balances instead of increasing them
    • Avoid applying for too much credit at once
    • Check your credit report regularly to stay informed

Good financial habits help rebuild your score over time and prevent old mistakes from returning.
