Cooking ribs in the oven does not always have to take hours. With the right preparation and a higher heat setting, you can enjoy tender, flavourful ribs in a much shorter time. Fast-cooked ribs may not be as fall-apart soft as slow-cooked ones, but they still turn out juicy, well-seasoned, and satisfying. The key is to use a simple marinade or dry rub, cover the ribs well to keep in moisture, and finish them uncovered for a beautiful caramelised glaze. With this method, you can prepare a delicious rib meal even on a busy day.

    1. Prepare and Season the Ribs

Start by rinsing the ribs under cold water and patting them dry. Place them on a board and remove the thin membrane on the underside if it hasn’t been taken off already, as this helps the ribs become more tender. Season generously with salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and any favourite spices. You can also brush on a quick marinade made from barbecue sauce, soy sauce, mustard, or a mix of oil and vinegar. Let the ribs sit for about ten minutes while you preheat the oven.

    1. Use High Heat for Faster Cooking
Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F) or up to 220°C (428°F) if you want the ribs to cook even quicker. Place the ribs on a baking tray lined with foil. For fast cooking, it’s important to seal in moisture, so cover the ribs tightly with another sheet of foil. This traps steam, softens the meat, and speeds up the cooking process.
    2. Bake the Ribs Covered
Put the covered ribs in the oven and bake for about forty-five minutes to one hour, depending on the thickness of the ribs. They should become tender and release some juices inside the foil. Avoid opening the foil too early, as this will release the trapped steam and slow down the cooking.
    3. Uncover and Brown the Ribs
Once the ribs are tender, remove the foil and brush them generously with barbecue sauce, honey glaze, or any preferred basting sauce. Return the ribs to the oven uncovered and cook for an additional ten to fifteen minutes. This step allows the ribs to brown, caramelise, and develop a sticky, delicious coating. If you want them even more charred, switch on the grill for the last three minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
    4. Serve and Enjoy
Remove the ribs from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes before cutting. This helps the juices settle. Serve with chips, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, pap, or a fresh salad. Fast-cooked oven ribs offer a quick, satisfying way to enjoy a meaty, flavour-packed meal without waiting hours.
