Drawing a bat is a great way to explore animal shapes and symmetry, especially if you’re interested in learning how to draw wings and animal forms. Whether you’re drawing for Halloween, school, or fun, a bat can be a simple yet creative sketch to practice. You only need paper, a pencil, an eraser, and optional coloring materials. Here is how to draw a bat.

Start with the Bat’s Head and Body

Begin by drawing a small oval or round shape in the center of your paper for the bat’s head. Just below that, sketch a larger oval or teardrop shape for the body. Bats have compact bodies, so keep this part short and rounded. Lightly draw so it’s easier to make changes.

    Add the Ears and Face

From the top of the head, draw two pointy ears that curve slightly outward. They should look like small triangles with soft edges. Inside the face, you can add two small eyes, a tiny upside-down triangle for a nose, and a curved line or two for a smiling mouth. You can make the face realistic or cartoon-style, depending on your preference.

    Sketch the Wings

To draw the wings, start from each side of the head or upper body. Extend long, curved lines outward and upward—these will be the top bones of the wings. From the tip of each of these lines, draw three or four downward-curving lines, spaced apart. These form the bat’s wing structure, resembling fingers.

Then, connect the ends of these curved lines with long, wavy lines to complete the shape of the wings’ membranes. The result should look like an arched pattern, mimicking the flexible, skin-covered wings bats are known for.

Draw the Feet and Final Details

At the bottom of the body, add two small legs or claws dangling down. These can be drawn with short, curved lines. You can also refine the wings by darkening the outlines and making sure both sides are symmetrical.

    Add Shading or Color

If you want to shade the bat, darken the wings slightly and add shadows under the ears, wings, and lower body. If you’re coloring, use dark grey or black for the body and wings, and light pink or red for the inner ears or tongue, if visible.
