Drawing a rat is a fun and simple activity, especially if you’re interested in animals or just looking for an easy sketch idea. Rats have distinct features like a long tail, rounded ears, and a pointed nose, which make them interesting to draw. Here is how to draw a rat.

Step 1: Draw the Head and Body

Start by drawing a small oval for the head. Then, draw a larger oval or rounded shape behind it for the body. The head and body should be connected slightly to form a smooth curve, as rats have slender, streamlined bodies.

Step 2: Add the Nose and Ears

At the front of the head, draw a small circle or point for the nose. Add two curved lines going outward from the nose for whiskers.

Now, draw two large, round ears on top of the head. Rats have relatively big ears compared to their heads, so make them stand out.

Step 3: Draw the Eyes and Mouth

Inside the head, draw a small circle for the eye. You can fill it in with black and leave a tiny white dot for shine. Below the nose, add a small curved line for the mouth.

Step 4: Sketch the Legs and Paws

Draw two front legs coming down from the body near the head. These can be short, curved lines that end in tiny toes or paws. Do the same at the back for the hind legs, but make them slightly longer and angled backward.

    Step 5: Add the Tail

From the back of the body, draw a long, curved tail. The tail should be smooth and taper toward the end. You can make it slightly wavy or coiled for a natural look.

    Step 6: Add Fur Details

Lightly sketch short lines around the body and head to show fur. Rats have fine, soft fur, so keep the strokes light and not too long.

    Step 7: Outline and Color

Go over your pencil drawing with a black pen or marker. Erase any unnecessary lines to clean up the sketch. When coloring, you can use shades of gray, brown, or black for the body. The ears, nose, paws, and tail are usually pink or light brown.
