While WhatsApp’s “Archive” feature is commonly used to hide chats, some users prefer alternative methods that don’t rely on it. Whether you’re trying to keep certain conversations private or just want to keep your chat list tidy, there are ways to conceal chats without using the archive option. Here is how to hide WhatsApp chat without archive.
- Use WhatsApp Lock or App Lock Feature
If your phone supports app lock, you can protect your entire WhatsApp app from being opened without a password or fingerprint.
- On Samsung or other Android phones: Go to Settings > Security > App Lock or Secure Folder, then select WhatsApp and enable lock.
- On iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Time > App Limits, then set a time lock for WhatsApp.
This won’t hide individual chats but prevents others from opening the app and seeing any messages.
- Change Contact Name and Profile Picture
One simple method is to rename the contact you want to hide and remove their profile picture.
- Open the contact in your phone’s address book.
- Rename them to something neutral like “Notes” or “Work Doc.”
- Ask them to remove their profile photo, or block them temporarily so it doesn’t show.
This way, even if someone glances at your chat list, they won’t recognize the contact.
- Use a Third-Party App Lock for Specific Chats (Android Only)
Some third-party apps like Chat Lock for WhatsApp or Locker for WhatsApp Chat App allow you to lock specific conversations with a PIN or fingerprint.
- Download a trusted locker app from the Google Play Store.
- Choose the chats you want to hide and set up a password.
- Only you can open the chat after unlocking it.
Note: Use these apps with caution and ensure they don’t compromise your privacy.
- Muting and Moving Chats Down
Another way is to mute the chat and stop notifications.
- Open the chat, tap the three dots, and choose Mute notifications.
- Choose “Always.”
- Avoid sending or receiving frequent messages in the chat. It will move down in your chat list and go unnoticed.
- Hide WhatsApp from Your Home Screen
On some Android devices, you can remove WhatsApp from the home screen or hide it entirely from the app drawer using settings or launcher options.
