If you enjoy cooking with rich, dairy-free ingredients, learning how to make coconut milk at home is a valuable skill. Coconut milk is widely used in soups, curries, desserts, and beverages across tropical regions, especially in countries such as Thailand where it plays an important role in traditional cuisine. While canned versions are convenient, homemade coconut milk offers a fresher taste and allows you to control thickness and purity. With just dried or fresh coconut and water, you can prepare smooth, creamy coconut milk in your own kitchen.

Ingredients and Equipment You Will Need

Making coconut milk requires very few ingredients, but proper blending and straining are essential for the best texture.

    • 2 cups fresh grated coconut or unsweetened dried coconut
      • 3 to 4 cups hot water
      • Blender
      • Fine strainer, cheesecloth, or clean kitchen towel
      • Large bowl or jug

If using dried coconut, make sure it is unsweetened. Sweetened coconut will affect the taste and is better suited for desserts.

    1. Preparing the Coconut

If you are using fresh coconut, grate it finely to make blending easier. Fresh coconut provides a richer flavor, but dried coconut works well and is more convenient.

Place the coconut into the blender. Pour hot water over it. The heat helps release the natural oils from the coconut, creating a creamier milk. Allow the mixture to sit for about 5 minutes before blending to soften the coconut slightly.

    1. Blending and Extracting the Milk

Blend the coconut and water on high speed for 1 to 2 minutes until the mixture becomes thick and milky. The liquid should appear white and creamy.

Place a strainer lined with cheesecloth or a clean kitchen towel over a large bowl. Carefully pour the blended mixture into the cloth.

Gather the edges of the cloth and squeeze firmly to extract as much liquid as possible. This liquid is your fresh coconut milk. Press well to remove all the milk from the pulp.

If you prefer thinner coconut milk, add a little more warm water and stir. For thicker coconut milk, use less water during blending.

    1. Storing and Using Coconut Milk

Homemade coconut milk should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It is best used within 2 to 3 days for maximum freshness. Shake or stir before using, as natural separation may occur.

You can use coconut milk in:

    • Curries and stews
      • Smoothies
      • Baking recipes
      • Rice dishes
      • Soups

The leftover coconut pulp can be dried and used in baking or added to porridge.
