If you enjoy preparing desserts from scratch, learning how to make custard powder at home can be both practical and cost-effective. Custard powder is commonly used to prepare smooth, creamy custard without needing fresh eggs. It is popular in many households across countries such as United Kingdom, where traditional custard is often served with puddings and fruit desserts. Making your own custard powder allows you to control the ingredients, avoid artificial additives, and adjust flavor to your preference. With just a few pantry staples, you can prepare a homemade version that works just as well as store-bought options.

      Ingredients You Will Need

Homemade custard powder mainly relies on cornstarch as the thickening agent. The rest of the ingredients enhance flavor and color.

    • 1 cup cornstarch
      • 2 to 3 tablespoons milk powder
      • 2 to 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
      • ½ teaspoon vanilla powder or vanilla essence
      • A pinch of turmeric or yellow food coloring for color

Cornstarch forms the base of custard powder, while milk powder adds creaminess. Turmeric is used in very small amounts purely for color and should not affect the taste.

    1. Mixing the Dry Ingredients

Place the cornstarch into a clean, dry bowl. Add the milk powder and powdered sugar. Mix thoroughly using a spoon or whisk to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed.

If using turmeric for color, add only a tiny pinch and stir well. The goal is to achieve a light yellow color similar to traditional custard powder. Avoid adding too much, as it may alter the flavor.

If you are using vanilla essence instead of vanilla powder, it is better to add it later when preparing the custard rather than mixing it into the powder.

    1. Sifting and Storing

For a smooth final product, sift the mixture through a fine sieve. Sifting removes lumps and ensures the powder blends evenly when cooking.

Transfer the custard powder into an airtight container. Store it in a cool, dry place away from moisture. Properly stored custard powder can last several weeks.

Keeping the container tightly sealed prevents clumping and maintains freshness.

    1. Using Your Homemade Custard Powder

To prepare custard using your homemade powder, follow these simple steps.

    • Mix 2 tablespoons custard powder with a small amount of cold milk to form a smooth paste
      • Heat 2 cups of milk in a saucepan
      • Add sugar to taste
      • Stir in the custard paste while whisking continuously
      • Cook over low heat until thick and smooth

Stir constantly to prevent lumps and ensure even thickening.
