If you want to make gravy without tomatoes, you can still achieve a rich and tasty result using onions, spices, and flour or stock. This method is easy, quick, and perfect for everyday meals. Here is how to make gravy without tomatoes.

  1. Gather Your Ingredients and Materials
    To make tomato-free gravy, you will need two medium onions, two tablespoons of cooking oil or butter, one tablespoon of flour (for thickening), one cup of water or meat/vegetable stock, salt, and spices like black pepper, curry powder, garlic, or paprika. You will also need a pan, a spoon, and a knife.
  2. Prepare and Cook the Onions
    Peel and chop the onions finely. In a pan, heat the oil or butter over medium heat. Add the onions and cook them slowly, stirring often, until they turn golden brown. This may take 8 to 10 minutes and is important for giving your gravy a deep, rich flavour.
  3. Add Spices and Flour
    Once the onions are soft and browned, add your choice of spices—about half a teaspoon of each is enough to start. Stir for a minute to toast the spices gently. Then add the flour and stir it into the onion mixture. Cook for one to two minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  4. Pour in Water or Stock
    Slowly add the water or stock while stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Continue stirring until the mixture becomes smooth and begins to thicken. Let it simmer gently for five to ten minutes so the flavours can blend well.
  5. Adjust and Serve
    Taste your gravy and add salt or more seasoning if needed. If the gravy is too thick, add a little more water or stock. If it’s too thin, let it simmer a bit longer. Once ready, serve hot over your main dish.
