Lasagna mince is the flavorful meat sauce that forms the heart of a delicious lasagna. It’s made by simmering ground beef with tomatoes, herbs, and seasonings to create a rich, savory filling that complements the layers of pasta and cheese. The key to a great lasagna mince is slow cooking to allow the flavors to develop fully. Here is how to make lasagna mince.
Ingredients
- 500g ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork for extra flavor)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (400g) chopped tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon sugar (to balance acidity)
- 1 cup beef stock or red wine (optional)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Steps to Make Lasagna Mince
- Heat the Oil
- In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent.
- Cook the Garlic and Meat
- Add the minced garlic and stir for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Add the Tomatoes and Seasoning
- Stir in the chopped tomatoes and tomato paste.
- Add oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar.
- Pour in the beef stock or red wine, if using, for extra depth of flavor.
- Simmer the Sauce
- Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for at least 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
- Taste and Adjust
- Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if necessary. If it’s too acidic, add a little more sugar.
Using the Mince in Lasagna
Once your lasagna mince is ready, layer it with cooked lasagna sheets and a creamy béchamel or cheese sauce. Bake the lasagna in the oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 30 to 40 minutes, until golden and bubbly.
