       Ingredients and Kitchen Tools

Having everything ready makes the process faster and more organized.

    For the Dough

    • 3 cups all-purpose flour
    • 250g cold butter or margarine
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • 1 egg (for glazing)
    • Cold water (as needed)

    For the Filling

    • 300g minced beef
    • 1 onion (finely chopped)
    • 1 carrot (diced)
    • 1 potato (diced, optional)
    • 2 tablespoons flour (for thickening)
    • 1 teaspoon curry powder
    • 1 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 beef cube (optional)
    • Salt to taste
    • Cooking oil
    • A little water or broth

    Tools You’ll Need

    • Mixing bowl
    • Rolling pin
    • Frying pan
    • Baking tray
    • Fork
    • Pastry brush
    1. Prepare the Meat Pie Filling

Make the filling first so it has enough time to cool before assembling the pies.

    • Heat a little oil in a pan over medium heat.
    • Add the chopped onions and sauté until soft.
    • Add the minced meat and cook until browned.
    • Stir in diced carrots and potatoes, if using.
    • Add seasoning: curry powder, black pepper, salt, and beef cube.
    • Add 1–2 tablespoons of flour to thicken the mixture.
    • Pour in a little water or broth and let it simmer for 5–7 minutes.
    • Cook until the vegetables soften and the mixture becomes thick.
    • Remove from heat and allow it to cool completely.
    1. Make the Meat Pie Dough

The secret to soft, flaky pies is cold ingredients and gentle handling.

    • In a bowl, mix flour, salt, and baking powder.
    • Add cold butter and rub it into the flour with your fingertips until it forms crumbs.
    • Add cold water gradually to form a soft, non-sticky dough.
    • Do NOT over-knead—overworking the dough makes pies tough.
    • Cover and rest the dough for 10–15 minutes.
    1. Assemble the Meat Pies

This is where your pies take shape.

    • Dust a flat surface with flour and roll out the dough.
    • Cut out circular or rectangular shapes using a cutter or plate.
    • Place a spoonful of filling on one half of each piece.
    • Fold over the dough and press the edges with a fork to seal.
    • Place the pies on a greased baking tray.
    • Beat an egg and brush the tops for a golden finish.
    1. Bake and Serve

    • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
    • Bake the meat pies for 25–35 minutes, or until golden brown.
    • Allow to cool slightly before serving.
