If you are curious about how to make pot brownies, it is important to approach the process with caution, responsibility, and a clear understanding of the laws in your area. Pot brownies are traditional chocolate brownies infused with cannabis. Because cannabis laws vary widely, always confirm local regulations before attempting to prepare or consume infused foods. In many countries, including Kenya, recreational cannabis remains illegal, and possession or use can carry serious legal consequences.

Where cannabis use is legal for medical or recreational purposes, pot brownies are one of the most common edible forms. The key to making them properly lies in preparing cannabis-infused butter, often called cannabutter, and using it in place of regular butter in a standard brownie recipe.

      Understand Decarboxylation

Raw cannabis must be heated before it becomes psychoactive. This process is called decarboxylation. Without it, the active compounds will not produce the desired effect.

    To decarboxylate cannabis:

    • Preheat the oven to a low temperature around 110 to 120°C
    • Break cannabis into small pieces, not powder
    • Spread evenly on a baking tray lined with parchment paper
    • Bake for 30 to 40 minutes

The cannabis should turn slightly darker and dry. Allow it to cool before using.

    1. Prepare Cannabutter

Cannabutter is the base ingredient for most cannabis edibles.

    You will need:

    • 1 cup unsalted butter
    • 1 cup water
    • Decarboxylated cannabis

In a saucepan, melt the butter with water over low heat. Add the cannabis and let the mixture simmer gently for 2 to 3 hours. Do not boil. Stir occasionally.

    After simmering:

    • Strain the mixture through cheesecloth
    • Squeeze out as much liquid as possible
    • Refrigerate until solid

Once chilled, the butter will separate from the water. Remove the solid butter layer and discard the water.

    1. Gather Brownie Ingredients

To make brownies, you will need:

    • 1 cup cannabutter
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 2 eggs
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • ½ cup cocoa powder
    • ½ cup flour
    • A pinch of salt

You can also use a boxed brownie mix and substitute regular butter with cannabutter.

    1. Mix the Batter

    Preheat the oven to 175°C.

    In a bowl:

    • Cream together cannabutter and sugar
    • Add eggs one at a time
    • Stir in vanilla

In a separate bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until smooth.

    Do not overmix.

    1. Bake Carefully

Pour the batter into a greased baking pan.

Bake for 20 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Avoid overbaking, as this can dry out the brownies.

Allow them to cool completely before cutting.

    1. Portion Responsibly

Edibles take longer to take effect compared to smoking. Effects may begin after 30 minutes to 2 hours.

    Important guidelines:

    • Start with a small portion
    • Wait before consuming more
    • Label clearly and store safely
    • Keep away from children and pets

Overconsumption can lead to uncomfortable side effects.
