Measuring height with a phone is a convenient alternative when you don’t have a tape measure. Modern smartphones come with advanced sensors and built-in apps that can accurately measure height using augmented reality (AR) technology. Whether you need to check your own height, measure someone else, or determine the height of an object, your phone can help. Here is how to measure height with phone.

    Using iPhone’s Measure App

If you have an iPhone with LiDAR technology (such as iPhone 12 Pro, 13 Pro, 14 Pro, or newer models), you can use the built-in Measure app to check height accurately.

    1. Open the Measure App – Find and open the Measure app on your iPhone.
    2. Position the Camera – Stand a few feet away from the person you are measuring and ensure their entire body is visible on the screen.
    3. Let the App Detect Height – The app will automatically detect the top of the head and display the height in feet, inches, or centimeters.
    4. Take a Screenshot (Optional) – If needed, tap the shutter button to capture a photo with the height measurement.

The Measure app works best in well-lit areas and on a flat surface. If the measurement is slightly off, reposition the phone and try again.

Using Android Apps for Height Measurement

Android devices do not have a built-in height measurement tool like Apple’s Measure app, but there are third-party apps available on the Google Play Store that use augmented reality and the phone’s camera to estimate height. Some popular options include:

    • Google Measure (for ARCore-supported devices)
    • Smart Measure
    • Ruler App – Camera Tape Measure

How to Measure Height Using an Android App

    1. Download and Install the App – Search for a reliable measurement app in the Play Store and install it.
    2. Follow Calibration Instructions – Some apps require you to calibrate your phone by measuring a known object first.
    3. Position the Camera – Stand a few feet away and point the camera at the person or object.
    4. Set the Measurement Points – Many apps require you to mark the bottom and top of the subject manually.
    5. Read the Height Measurement – The app will calculate and display the height based on the camera’s perspective.

Using a Phone and a Wall

If you don’t have a measurement app or a LiDAR-equipped phone, you can use a more traditional approach with your phone and a piece of string or paper.

    1. Stand against a wall and mark the top of your head with a pencil.
    2. Use your phone’s length as a reference (most smartphones are between 5 to 7 inches long).
    3. Stack your phone or use a string to measure from the floor to the mark on the wall.
    4. Multiply the number of phone lengths to estimate your height.
