Getting chewing gum stuck on your clothes can be frustrating, especially when it seems impossible to remove without damaging the fabric. While many people think you need special cleaning products, a simple household item can do the trick. Learning how to remove chewing gum from clothes with toothpaste is a practical and cost-effective method that works surprisingly well. Toothpaste helps break down the gum’s stickiness, making it easier to lift off the fabric without leaving a mess behind.

      Let the Gum Harden First

Before applying toothpaste, it’s important to make the gum less sticky. If the gum is soft, it will spread and make the situation worse.

You can harden it by placing the clothing item in the freezer for about 30 minutes. Once the gum becomes firm, gently scrape off as much as possible using a blunt object like a spoon or a dull knife.

    • Avoid using sharp objects that may damage the fabric
    • Remove only the top layer of gum at this stage
    • Do not pull too hard to prevent fabric stretching
    1. Apply Toothpaste to the Affected Area

After removing the excess gum, apply a small amount of regular white toothpaste directly onto the remaining residue. Avoid gel-based toothpaste, as it may not be as effective.

Rub the toothpaste gently into the fabric using your fingers or a soft brush. The mild abrasives in toothpaste help loosen the gum from the fibers.

    • Use non-gel, plain white toothpaste
    • Apply just enough to cover the affected area
    • Work it in gently to avoid damaging delicate fabrics
    1. Scrub and Loosen the Gum

Once the toothpaste is applied, begin scrubbing the area lightly. You should notice the gum starting to break apart and lift from the fabric.

Continue scrubbing until most of the gum residue is gone. If needed, add a little more toothpaste and repeat the process.

    • Use a soft-bristled brush for better results
    • Be patient and avoid aggressive scrubbing
    • Repeat the process for stubborn spots
    1. Rinse and Check the Fabric

After the gum is removed, rinse the area thoroughly with warm water to wash away the toothpaste and any remaining residue.

Inspect the fabric carefully. If traces of gum remain, you can repeat the toothpaste application and scrubbing process.

    • Ensure all toothpaste is rinsed out
    • Check both sides of the fabric
    • Repeat if necessary before drying
    1. Wash the Garment Normally

Once the gum is fully removed, wash the clothing item as you normally would using your regular detergent. This helps restore the fabric and remove any remaining particles.

Allow the garment to air dry and check again before using a dryer, as heat can set any leftover residue.

    • Use appropriate washing settings for the fabric
    • Avoid high heat until you are sure the gum is gone
    • Let the clothing air dry for best results
