Cooking oil stains are among the most stubborn marks you can get on clothing. Whether it happens while frying food or handling greasy dishes, oil tends to cling to fabric and can leave dark patches if not treated properly. The good news is that learning how to remove cooking oil stains from clothes is easier than it seems when you use the right approach. Acting quickly and using common household items can help you restore your clothes without causing damage.

      • Wash the Clothing Properly

      Blot the Excess Oil Immediately

The first step is to remove as much oil as possible before it sets into the fabric. Use a paper towel, tissue, or clean cloth to gently blot the stain.

Avoid rubbing the stain, as this can push the oil deeper into the fibers and make it harder to remove.

    • Dab gently to absorb the oil
    • Work from the outside of the stain inward
    • Act quickly for best results
    1. Apply an Absorbent Powder

After blotting, apply an absorbent substance like baking soda, cornstarch, or baby powder directly onto the stain. These materials help draw out the oil from the fabric.

Let the powder sit on the stain for at least 15–30 minutes, or longer for heavier stains. Then brush it off gently.

    • Cover the entire stained area
    • Leave it long enough to absorb the oil
    • Repeat if the stain is still visible
    1. Use Dish Soap to Break Down Grease

Dishwashing liquid is designed to cut through grease, making it very effective for oil stains.

Apply a small amount directly onto the stain and gently rub it in using your fingers or a soft brush. Let it sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

    • Choose a grease-cutting dish soap
    • Work it gently into the fabric
    • Avoid harsh scrubbing on delicate materials
    1. Rinse and Check the Stain

Rinse the treated area with warm water and check if the stain is still visible. If needed, repeat the dish soap treatment until the oil is completely gone.

It’s important to ensure the stain is fully removed before moving to the next step.

    • Inspect the fabric carefully in good lighting
    • Repeat treatment for stubborn stains
    • Do not proceed if the stain remains
    1. Wash the Clothing Properly

Once the stain is gone, wash the garment according to its care label using your regular detergent. This helps remove any remaining residue and restores the fabric.

Avoid using hot water unless the fabric allows it, and always check the stain before drying.

    • Use the recommended washing temperature
    • Avoid the dryer until the stain is completely gone
    • Air dry for best results
