When working in Microsoft Word, selecting all the text in a document can help you make quick and uniform changes. Whether you want to change the font, adjust formatting, copy the content, or delete everything, knowing how to select all text is a useful skill. The process is simple, and you can do it using keyboard shortcuts, menu options, or a mouse. This works for both short documents and long files with multiple pages. Here is how to select all text in Word.
- Open Your Word Document
Launch Microsoft Word and open the document you want to edit. Make sure the document is not in “Read-Only” mode so you can make changes. - Use a Keyboard Shortcut
The quickest way to select all text is by using the keyboard shortcut. On Windows, press Ctrl + A. On Mac, press Command + A. This will instantly highlight all the text and objects in your document. - Select All Using the Menu
If you prefer not to use shortcuts, you can do it through the menu. Click on the “Home” tab in the ribbon at the top of the screen, then go to the “Editing” group on the far right. Click on “Select” and choose “Select All” from the dropdown menu. This will highlight all text in your document. - Select All with a Mouse
You can also use your mouse to select everything manually, although it is slower for long documents. Place your cursor at the very beginning of the document, hold down the left mouse button, and drag it all the way to the end until all text is highlighted. - Select All in Specific Sections
If you only want to select all text in a certain section rather than the entire document, place your cursor in that section and use Ctrl + A or Command + A. In some cases, Word will limit the selection to the current section depending on your settings. - Making Changes After Selecting
Once all text is highlighted, you can easily apply formatting changes such as adjusting font size, style, or color. You can also copy the text to another document or delete it entirely if you need a fresh start.
