Ian James Poulter, nicknamed “The Postman,” is a prominent English professional golfer known for his flamboyant style, resilient match-play performances, and passionate contributions to the Ryder Cup.
Born on January 10, 1976, in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England, and raised in Stevenage, Poulter developed a love for golf at the tender age of four when his father, Terry, gave him a cut-down 3-wood.
His mother, who managed a branch of the fashion chain Dorothy Perkins, inspired his eccentric and colorful on-course attire.
Poulter left school at 15 and began his career as an assistant professional and golf shop manager at Chesfield Downs Golf Club after failing to secure a position at a private club.
He turned professional in 1995 and has since built a career spanning the European Tour (now DP World Tour), PGA Tour, and now the LIV Golf League, where he competes for the Majestics team.
Siblings
Ian grew up with one older brother, Danny Poulter, who also pursued a career as a professional golfer.
Danny’s involvement in golf complemented Ian’s own journey, though Ian ultimately achieved greater prominence on the professional stage.
Their father Terry encouraged their athletic pursuits, fostering a competitive yet supportive family environment centered around the game.
Career
Poulter’s professional journey began modestly after turning pro in 1995.

In his rookie season of 2000, he claimed the Italian Open and earned the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award.
Over the following years, he established himself as a consistent performer on the European Tour, amassing 12 victories in total.
Poulter made his mark on the PGA Tour with three wins: the 2010 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, the 2012 WGC-HSBC Champions, and the 2018 Houston Open.
His career has been defined by dramatic moments, particularly in match play, and he reached a career-high world ranking of fifth in 2010.
In recent years, Poulter transitioned to the LIV Golf League while maintaining his association as the touring professional at Woburn Golf and Country Club.
Known for his fighting spirit and ability to elevate his game under pressure, he has balanced a long career with family life and business interests, including fashion-inspired golf apparel.
Accolades
Poulter has secured 12 wins on the European Tour (DP World Tour) and three on the PGA Tour, along with additional victories on the Japan Golf Tour and elsewhere, totaling around 17 professional wins worldwide.
Poulter is perhaps best celebrated for his Ryder Cup heroics, having been a member of five winning European teams across seven appearances, where his clutch performances and leadership earned him the affectionate title of “Mr. Ryder Cup.”
Notable individual achievements include two World Golf Championship titles and a runner-up finish at the 2008 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
