chilobaTwo months after the October 26 repeat polls, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO, Ezra Chiloba resurfaced.

The CEO who was under immense pressure from the opposition to resign from his position took a three week break, a week to the polls.

He said that his being away would ‘build confidence in the stakeholders.’

Speaking on Citizen TV on Wednesday, Chiloba commented Commissioner Roselyn Akombe’s exit days before the polls.

”We had our own internal challenges, Akombe leaving at the critical moment. She had her own views about how she thought elections were going to be managed. Majority of us disagreed with those views,” he said.

Her leaving, he says served as a wake up call to the rest of the team which then decided to pull together in order to deliver on their promise to Kenyans.

On October 18, Akombe fled to New York city citing death threats. She added that the repeat polls could not have been credible as they were being organized by a ‘very divided commission.’

“It has become increasingly difficult to appear on television to defend positions I disagree with in the name of collective responsibility. I have concluded that I am no longer making any significant contribution to the commission and to my country as a commissioner,” she said in a statement.

”We need the IEBC to be courageous and speak out, that this election as planned cannot meet the basic expectations of credibility. Not when senior secretariat staff and commissioners are serving partisan political interests,” she added.

The elections were held even after NASA leader Raila Odinga pulled out of the race for state house.

He called for electoral reforms and a fresh election held in 90 days.
