    Syed Inzamam-ul-Haq, popularly known as Inzi or the Sultan of Multan, is a former Pakistani international cricketer widely regarded as one of the finest middle-order batsmen Pakistan has produced.

    He was born on 3 March 1970 in Multan, Punjab, Pakistan. He comes from a Syed Sunni Muslim family with roots in Sufism.

    He was a right-handed batsman known for his elegant strokeplay, particularly against pace bowling. He was also known for his calm demeanour at the crease.

    His family had migrated from Hansi in what is now Haryana, India, following the 1947 Partition.

    Inzamam represented Pakistan from 1991 to 2007. He played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s 1992 Cricket World Cup victory.

    He captained the national side across formats. He later served as Pakistan’s chief selector.

    Inzamam-ul-Haq is the youngest of five siblings consisting of four brothers and one sister.

    His eldest brother, Ehteram-ul-Haq, also referred to as Ehtiram, served as an English professor at Hussain Islamia Degree College in Multan.

    Another brother, Insaram-ul-Haq, is a local businessman in Multan.

    Insaram is the father of current Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq, making Imam Inzamam’s nephew.

    He is also noted as having played at least one first-class match that inspired the young Inzamam.

    Intisar-ul-Haq passed away and was laid to rest in East London in April 2023.

    Career

    Inzamam made his One Day International debut on 22 November 1991 against West Indies. He made his Test debut on 4 June 1992 against England.

    He played 120 Test matches for Pakistan. He scored 8,830 Test runs at an average of approximately 49.60.

    His Test tally included 25 centuries.

    His highest Test score was 329 against New Zealand in Lahore in 2002. The score ranks among the highest individual Test scores by a Pakistani batsman.

    In 378 ODIs, he amassed 11,739 runs at an average of 39.53. He scored 10 ODI centuries.

    He became Pakistan’s leading run-scorer in the format. He was also the only Pakistani to exceed 10,000 ODI runs.

    He featured in five World Cups during his international career.

    In the 1992 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, he scored a rapid 60 off 37 balls. His innings helped propel Pakistan into the final, where the team went on to win the tournament.

    Inzamam was appointed captain around 2003. He led Pakistan in 31 Tests and 87 ODIs until 2007.

    During his captaincy, Pakistan recorded series successes including victories against India and away wins.

    He also played Pakistan’s first T20 International.

    After retiring from international cricket, he briefly coached Afghanistan. He later served twice as Pakistan’s chief selector.

    Accolades

    Inzamam received the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, one of Pakistan’s highest civilian awards, from the government in 2005.

    He was named in the ICC Test and ODI teams of the year in 2005. He became an honorary life member of the Marylebone Cricket Club.

    His contributions were further recognised with his induction into the Pakistan Cricket Board Hall of Fame in 2025 alongside other greats.

    He held or shares several Pakistani records.

    These include the most ODI runs for Pakistan and a high number of half-centuries in both formats. He is also one of the few Pakistanis to score more than 20,000 international runs.

    His 329 remains the second-highest Test score by a Pakistani batsman.

    He is remembered for match-winning performances and leadership during a successful era for the Pakistan national team.
