IPOA Accuses Standard Newspaper Of Publishing False Information

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has accused The Standard newspaper of publishing misleading information about its ongoing investigation into the death of teacher and influencer Albert Ojwang.

In a statement issued on Friday evening, IPOA Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Issack Hassan said the report published on page 4 of The Standard was inaccurate.

The article had claimed that Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat was interrogated by both the IPOA Chairperson and CEO, a claim Hassan strongly refuted.

“Mr. Lagat was not interrogated by the Chairperson or myself. He was received and processed by the technical investigation team handling the matter,” Hassan clarified.

He explained that this process aligns with IPOA’s operational structure, where a clear distinction is maintained between policy roles and investigative functions to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Hassan confirmed that Lagat appeared before the Authority on June 19, 2025, following a formal summons.

He is now the 22nd police officer to record a statement in connection with the ongoing investigations.

Among those who have already given statements are former Central Police Station OCS Chief Inspector Samson Talaam, Deputy OCS Inspector Samuel Ng’ang’a, and Police Constable James Mukhwana.

Following IPOA’s requests, the courts have allowed all the suspects to be held for a longer period as investigations continue.

IPOA also addressed claims related to Chief Inspector Talaam’s mobile phone, which the Authority said was lawfully seized and is being securely held by its forensic team.

The Authority further disclosed that it has requested the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to probe allegations surrounding the phone’s alleged misuse. A report on this matter is expected in court by July 1, 2025.

IPOA urged the media to uphold professionalism by ensuring accuracy, fairness, and respect in their reporting.

“The Authority calls on the media to avoid sensationalism, especially on a matter of such significant public interest,” Hassan said.
