The chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, Ahmed Issack Hassan, has resigned from his position.

The development was confirmed by IPOA Vice Chairperson Ann Wanjiku Mwangi, who will now serve as acting chairperson.

“The Board wishes to inform the public that its Chairperson, Hon. Justice Ahmed Issack Hassan, SC, CBS, has tendered his resignation from the Authority. Following this development, the Vice Chairperson, Ms Anne Wanjiku Mwangi, will henceforth preside over the Board of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority as the process of filling the position of Chairperson commences, pursuant to Section 11 of the Cap. 86 of the Laws of Kenya and paragraph 4 of the Second Schedule to the Act,” she said in a statement.

Hassan, who previously served as chairperson of the Interim Independent Electoral Commission, is returning to the legal profession after being appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal.

On Saturday, the Judiciary of Kenya deployed him to Nakuru, marking his first station as a judge.

His brief tenure at IPOA ends as he pursues what he described as a long-held ambition to serve on the bench.

“As an advocate, I think the highest goal you want to be is join the bench and become a judge,” he told the Judicial Service Commission during his interview last month.
