James Carville was born Chester James Carville Jr. on October 25, 1944, in Fort Benning. He grew up in Carville, Louisiana, where his mother Lucille worked as a school teacher and his father James served in the military during World War II.
Carville attended Ascension Catholic High School before enrolling at Louisiana State University. His early academic performance was poor, and he was temporarily expelled.
Afterward, he served two years in the United States Marine Corps, where he was stationed at Camp Pendleton.
Following his military service, Carville returned to Louisiana State University, eventually earning a bachelor’s degree in general studies and later a law degree in 1973. He went on to work as a lawyer in Baton Rouge while beginning his career in political consulting.
Political Consulting in the 1980s
Carville began gaining recognition in the 1980s as a political consultant.
