    Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Jason Curtis Newsted was born on March 4, 1963, in Battle Creek, Michigan. His love for music started early—he first picked up a guitar at the age of nine before switching to the bass at fourteen, inspired by Gene Simmons of Kiss. Newsted’s bass-playing heroes included Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath and Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, whose influence would later shape his distinct playing style.

    Rise to Fame with Metallica

Metallica was formed in 1981 by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, and by 1986 the band was looking for a new bassist following the tragic death of Cliff Burton in a bus accident in Sweden. More than fifty musicians auditioned for the spot, but it was Jason Newsted who landed the gig after being the final person to try out. Initially hired as a session player, he officially became a full member in April 1987.

During his time with Metallica—from 1986 to 2001—Newsted played on several of the band’s most iconic albums, including …And Justice for All, Metallica (also known as The Black Album), Load, and Reload. He co-wrote classic songs such as “Blackened,” “My Friend of Misery,” and “Where the Wild Things Are.”

    The Black Album Success

The Black Album, released in 1991, remains one of the best-selling albums in music history. Certified 16× Platinum, it continues to sell thousands of copies every week, even decades later. It’s widely believed that the album’s royalties alone could sustain each band member comfortably for life, underscoring how pivotal this era was in shaping Newsted’s fortune.

    Life After Metallica

After leaving Metallica in 2001, frustrated by creative differences, Newsted continued to explore music through various projects. He founded Echobrain, joined the Canadian metal band Voivod, and even toured with Ozzy Osbourne during Ozzfest 2003. Ironically, he replaced Robert Trujillo in Osbourne’s band—the same bassist who would later replace him in Metallica.

In 2009, Newsted reunited with Metallica at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, sharing the stage with both his former bandmates and his successor. He later formed his self-titled band, Newsted, where he showcased his talents as both a lead vocalist and bassist.

    Real Estate Ventures

Outside of music, Newsted has made savvy real estate investments. For years, he lived in a 6,700-square-foot mansion in Walnut Creek, California, which he sold in 2019 for $2.3 million. He also owned a massive 545-acre property in Montana known as the Rockin JN Ranch, complete with ponds, a 6,000-square-foot mansion, and guest houses—listed for $4.95 million in 2017.

In 2020, he bought a stunning $6.1 million lakefront estate on Skaneateles Lake in New York. Newsted also maintains several homes in Jupiter, Florida, and a country estate in Michigan.

    Personal Life

Jason Newsted has been married twice. His first marriage in 1988 was short-lived, lasting less than a year. In 2012, he married artist Nicole Leigh Smith, and the two have remained together since.
